Nowadays most of the major problems which bedevil humanity spring from the poor maintenance of the three symbiotic relationships most crucial to human wellbeing: the relationships between

§    body and spirit;     

§    individual and individual; 

§    Humanity and its planet.

These three symbiotic relationships sustain the lives of human beings, and the three “symbiosis” commitments form a rule-set for the sustainability of those symbiotic relationships:

The symbiosis between body and spirit, which is fundamental to the wellbeing of each individual.

The symbiosis between individuals, which is fundamental to the well-being of family and society, ensuring the continuity of generations and meeting our social, cultural and spiritual needs.

The symbiosis between humanity and "Nature” - the fragile life-supporting condition that currently prevails on this planet - which is fundamental to the survival and prosperity of the species.

 

These core commitments should lead to the development of key habits, the cultivation of key attitudes and the promotion of key concepts.

A way to sustain both body and spirit

The first commitment is to develop the habit of lifelong, self-motivated learning.  As long as we are willing to learn, we will have the power to create those possibilities for growth and fulfillment.   The natural world provides what we need to sustain our bodies; "culture" provides what we need to sustain our spirits.  The commitment to learning will prompt us to explore our options for the growth and fulfillment of both body and spirit, and guide our choices in a free world. The key symbiosis here is between the body and the spirit, both of which require nourishment. 

A way to sustain harmony in the world

The second commitment is to cultivate an attitude of respect for all other people.  There are ranks and classes in our material, social and political lives; but there is equality of access to spirituality.  We should "respect" all other people’s dignity regardless of perceived differences in age, gender, race, religion and culture.

Most of the pain and suffering in the world comes from personal abuse, from prejudice, intolerance and discrimination which focuses on racial, religious, gender and sexuality differences, and from the use of violence.  All of this heinous behavior is caused by people not showing other people the respect they need and deserve if they are to make the most of their own possibilities for growth and fulfillment. 

It is this commitment which guarantees a safe and happy childhood, and peaceful, law-abiding communities.  The key symbiosis here is between people.

A way to sustain our planet

The third commitment is to promote a vital concept: the protection of the planet.  Unless we protect the increasingly fragile eco systems which currently sustain us, we will irreparably damage them, with catastrophic results for life on earth.  This relationship is clearly fundamental to the survival and prosperity of the species, and MUST prompt us all to live in as eco-sustainable way as possible. The key symbiosis here is between humanity and the fragile life-supporting conditions which currently exist on this planet (often personified as “Mother Nature”). 

A simple way to a better world

       If this simple doctrine were to be incorporated into Educational Curricula all over the World and taught in schools, our hope would be that future generations of human beings everywhere will grow up firmly wedded to the three commitments and to the concepts, attitudes and habits they inspire.  If that can ever be made to happen, the world will have been changed for the better.

An Expedition underground to find the Crystal Mayan Maiden, this cave was featured in the National Geographic Explorer film Journey through the Underworld (1993). You will bounce over some rough road to get to the start, then trek through some steamy jungle for up to an hour, fording the river 3 times (the water may be up to your knees, or even higher) to get to the mouth of the cave.  Then you swim in (there is no other way) and make your way past stalactites and stalagmites to crystallized human remains from Mayan rituals more than a thousand years ago.  This is an awesome trip which is arguably not for the faint-hearted; that is why we run a more sedate option on the same day!  some of your family member may choose to spend time exploring Mayan, Mennonite and Mestizo population centers with their different cultural overtones instead
